Ras Baalbek is known for its traditional food and moune (products prepared during summer for winter), in addition to products derived from grapes. When visiting the town, you must indulge in the fresh tannour bread, baked using traditional methods. The dough gets stuck on a very hot stone, heated on coal. The dough rises creating tannour bread.
Molasses is extracted from dried grapes and it is one of the most famous desserts in the town. The sweet grapes give the molasses its sweetness and it is pressed by the town’s authentic and traditional press. It can be mixed with yogurt or tahini and during winter, many citizens used to eat it with ice.
When visiting Ras Baalbek, you can buy moune products like grapevine leaves stored in jars to be used in specific traditional Lebanese dishes during winter, “hosroum” juice extracted from green grapes and used as a substitute to lemon juice during winter, pomegranate citric juice, tomato paste, pepper jam, dried fruits, jams, makdous, kishk, thyme…
